Civil Designer
Job Description
Posted on: March 21, 2025
The change we want to make
We’re for people who love new neighbours and want to see our towns and country grow. Our civil and water engineering unlocks homes, workplaces, roads, schools, healthcare facilities, roads, and even mines. We're for growing communities in a new way. One that reduces urban sprawl and the demand for resources.
There are lots of opportunities for growth right in our backyards, and further afield. We uncover them.
Who we serve
We help architects, property developers, mining engineers, aged care professionals, town planners, rail operators and many others find space for their design vision, and get it approved and built.
We have customers in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory, which could be grown.
Our services could help similar people almost anywhere in the world. Kenya and Somalia's rural areas need help in flood modelling. Southeast Asian megacities have major problems with stormwater drainage. Rural Solomon Islanders have trouble getting access to drinking water.
There is a lot of opportunity.
Who we are
We’re 14 engineers in Australia, Yemen, Eswatini, and Malaysia. We design water systems, roads, stormwater, flood modelling, earthworks, water and wastewater treatment.
We also run a not-for-profit organisation--to which we donate around 10% of our expertise--delivering clean water and sanitation projects in the Pacific Islands.
We need help
We've developed a successful design and documentation process. Our growth means now that we need to go to the next level in our design and documentation. Our engineers need to focus on engineering and do less drawing.
We're looking for a Civil Designer to come in help us deliver some immediate projects. And in the long term, build some documentation systems than can grow with us.
The main technical areas are:
- civil grading and earthworks
- roads
- stormwater networks
- water, sewer and electrical reticulation
Our existing tools are:
- Civil 3D
- Civil Site Design
- DRAINS
- TUFLOW
The ideal person will be able to hit the ground running using our existing tools. We are open to changing tools, as required.
Who are we looking for?
Someone who shares our values. We love our work. It is not glamorous designing pavements and drainage, but we know how valuable and meaningful it is for building safe towns and communities.
We are not a big business so we have only a few systems. We need someone who is excited create a road map and follow it, not someone who wants to be given one. Someone who can do a bit of everything--from large projects to tiny ones. Who willing to roll their sleeves up say yes to something even if they don't know how to to do it yet.
We know meaningful change takes time. So we are looking for someone who wants a long-term relationship. Who is flexible to grow with us. To roll with our mistakes and join us as we grow.
We need someone who knows how to do civil design and documentation in Civil3D, ideally Civil Site Design. Other techniques and systems can be introduced after this.
We do not have a strong in-house documentation capability so we cannot train someone who doesn't know how to do it, no matter how keen you are.
We don't really care where you are from, where you went to school, what your GPA is or even how big your last project was. We care about what you can do and what you can teach yourself in the future.
The role is remote but you'll need to be available for at least four hours of overlap with NSW time, Monday to Friday. A few times a year we get together in Sydney or Melbourne. Apart from that hours and location are flexible.
